Artist Talk following 'The Einstein of Sex'

A musical docu-performance about a prominent group of sex-researchers in the early 1900's in Germany and their leader Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld. Livingstones Kabinet combines song, dance, video art and performance in a tightly-directed, sexy, absurdly comic and wildly inventive celebration of the gamut of human sexuality. The audiences are invited to discuss about the sexual atmosphere of Weimar Berlin and present-day attitudes to sexuality.

What issues are raised by the style and content of this music-theater performance? What is it's relevance in the anniversary year of the birth of sexologist and LGBT-rights campaigner Magnus Hirschfeld? Danish/Scottish performance group Livingstones Kabinet invites to a post-show discussion.

You can now reserve tickets (15/20/25/30€) including free admission to the artist discussion directly through Theater Scoutings! (up to 1 day before the performance)

About the venue

Ehemaliges Stummfilmkino Delphi/Berlin

The former silent film theater Delphi is an originally preserved silent film theater from the 1920’s. After resting like a hidden jewel for over 50 years, it is now being reawakened as an international center for arts and culture; housing diverse events: theater, dance, opera, concerts, performances, forums, exhibitions, and many hybrid projects. As a production and performance space it offers a unique and extraordinary setting, with wonderful acoustics and stunning aesthetics, inviting artists to reimagine their ideas, or even serve as a muse for new concepts. Exceptional projects which think “outside the (black)box” are at home with us. The theater also pays homage to the artistic visionaries of the past with events which honour the cultural history of Berlin, especially the German Silent Film era, which the Delphi was once a part of. The ghosts of the avantgarde are being awakened again in the former Delphi cinema.

About the music-theatre

The Einstein of Sex

The Einstein of Sex is a through-composed musical performance-lecture; a new polemic about human sexuality, gender and how we deal with these concepts. The show moves freely between styles and genres, with richly dark humour and a formal theatrical style to explore the nature of sexual intolerance and homophobia. The show also tells the story of sexologist/queer rights campaigner Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) who founded ‘Institut für Sexualwissenschaft’ in Berlin in 1919 and was known in the US press as ”The Einstein of Sex”. The sexual atmosphere of Weimar Berlin is contrasted with present-day attitudes to sexuality. The visual language draws on Hirschfeld’s rare, and bizarre collection of photographs and illustrations.
