Audience Feedback Session following the open rehearsal 'Paradise Circus'

An A.I. voice and a human body embark on a psychedlic trip to the mystical world of 'Paradise Circus', an inner territory where all things and all feelings are possible. The open rehearsal is framed by an audience feedback session to exchange different perceptions.

VOICE: Hello Human. Are you ready to enter Paradise Circus?HUMAN: What do I have to do?VOICE: You have to kill your ego.Inspired by Timothy Leary’s „The Psychedelic Experience“ the piece deals with the irrational and with what remains elusive for the rational mind. By shifting the focus from patterns and structures of ordinary thought to visions of the subconscious, 'Paradise Circus' wants to address modern society questions from an extraordinary, mind expanding perspective. The Open rehearsal is followed by a feedback format where the audience is invited to share their perception and impression.

About the venue

Uferstudios (Studio 1)

The Uferstudios for contemporary dance are a landmarked area in Berlin-Wedding that currently brings together a total of six partners from Berlin's independent dance scene. Thanks to the ada Studio & Bühne für zeitgenössischen Tanz, the Inter-University Dance Centre (HZT) Berlin, Tanzbuero Berlin, Tanzfabrik Berlin, the artist collective PSR, as well as the operating company Uferstudios GmbH, the location has matured into a centre for dance since its formation in 2010. Through the diversity of its partners, the Uferstudios bring a wide range of artistic processes and aesthetics of contemporary dance into the public eye. 17 studios, a café, a media library, offices and common rooms connected by a spacious courtyard offer artists space for concentrated work processes, lectures, performances and festivals and invite visitors to discover and gather. The self-image of the Uferstudios for contemporary dance is characterised by the coexistence of artistic production, education and information, which promote a synergetic collectivity on site and focus on openness and participation. And so the partners based here are dedicated not only to the local and international networking of the artists working here, but also to opening up to the city and the neighbourhood. The Uferstudios want to be a free space for the artists, students, academics and visitors who produce here and grow collectively with their ideas and activities.

About the artist

Despina Kapetanaki

Born in Athens, based in Berlin, Despina Kapetanaki works in the fields of theatre,
dance and performance. Her work is defined by an especially dynamic and expressive body language. She develops her pieces following experimental and research-based working processes. The focus of her practice lies on the body not only as a moving entity, but most importantly, as a manifestation of our deeper beliefs and emotions. In this sense she is researching a "poetic"body, one that expresses modern culture and its contemporary sociopolitical issues. She has a special interest in the performer-audience relationship, as well as in new media and their potential in creating fictive stage realities. She also creates performances and artistic interventions for the public space. From 2013 until 2015 she was directing the Experimental Theatre Studio in the University of Bielefeld. She studied theatre and acting in Athens and she received further training in physical theatre in Dublin by Nervousystem Theatre Company and in Denmark by Eugenio Barba and the Odin Theatre. Her work has been presented in venues such as the Uferstudios für zeitgenössichen Tanz in Berlin, Performing Arts Festival Berlin, Backloft Dublin and TV Control Center Athens
