Audience Talk following 'Machine to become_which Witch?'

The performance experiment explores old and new witches’ powers with movement, live-music and stories. The Audience Talk invites everbody to stay a bit after the performance to share their witch impressions, questions, secret power and witchy knowledge.

Why did we learn to fear witches and not those that burned them – or the power structures that legitimized oppression that persists internalized until today? The audience talk offers to dive deeper into the ideas the performance proposes: The witch is reawakening as a feminist* archetype of empowered experiential knowledge, fueling activism and subverting domination. Let´s share our witch stories and deal with questions like the following: How do old and new witches’ powers move us? What do we need to (re)enchant? Which witches will we find?

Tickets: Sliding Scale 10-20€

The Audience Talk takes place after the Performance and will be held bilingual, both in German and English and it´s included in the ticket price.

About the venue

Ackerstadtpalast

ACKER STADT PALAST - Stage for contemporary music theatre, contemporary dance, performance, theatre and new music. The Acker Stadt Palast in Berlin's Mitte district is a place where established artists and newcomers meet to experiment and reflect upon contemporary discourses. The focus of the venue, established in 2012, is on the connection between contemporary dance and new music. The Acker Stadt Palast offers the independent sector a novel interface between these art forms while also being interested in diverse aesthetic forms of dance and theatre. The house where the Acker Stadt Palace is located has a special history: A place in the backyard of a former chocolate factory (1881 - 1971), which was used in the 1930s as a home for the Hitler Youth and where in the GDR the VEB Kombinat Firma SERO (secondary raw materials) bought up bottles, paper, scrap metal and later also plastics for recycling. In 1991 the building, which had become empty in the meantime, was occupied by activists and artists and is today one of the last self-organised housing and cultural projects in the gentrified centre.

About the piece

Machine to become_which Witch?

The witch is reawakening as a feminist* archetype of empowered experiential knowledge, fueling activism and subverting domination. „Machine to become“ presents performance experiments to tackle complex concepts and transform stereotypes, working with audience assumptions, stories, sounds and movement.

About the artists

Machine to become

The project was conceived of in the frame of Oito Solos +1 in 2016 by dancers/choreographers Caroline Alves and Natalie Riedelsheimer as „Machine to become-Woman“. In 2019, dramaturg Nora Haakh joined and together they developed a trilogy on complex concepts, translating the approach from the first piece to tackle the topics of critical whiteness and the figure of the witch, for which they collaborate with a growing network of artists.
