Artist talk following 'Black Velvet'
Dance and performance art show dealing with architectures and archetypes. A research on the sensitivity of ideas, models and structures in a projection of the self, structures and textures as creative forces. Audiences are invited to share their impressions about the show and find more about the encounter between Shamel Pitts and Mirelle Martins.

„BLACK VELVET is a celebration of the many textures, beauty, delicacy, and strength within us. It Is an art piece that aims to share and reflect on the colorfulness of blackness - especially in regards to black women - in a relationship of love, compassion and camaraderie. The dealing within these structures of systems is to discover what is inside of us, between us and around us“, writes Shamel Pitts. Audiences are invited to exchange views and question Shamel Pitts and Mirelle Martins about what they searched and what they discovered.

About the venue
Dock 11
The factory level of Dock 11 in Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg is a rehearsals room, teaching studio and dance stage in one. The stage programme has interdisciplinary supplements such as theatre, performance, literature, music, visual art, film and club art – however the main focal point of every performance is on purely dance elements. Together with its other premises in EDEN***** in Berlin-Pankow, Dock 11 has established itself as an important part of the Berlin dance scene. The unique combination of teaching, rehearsal and stage generates an exciting change of perspectives in both the artists and pupils, as well as among the audience. (source: visitberlin.de)
About the performance
Black Velvet
An original multidisciplinary performance art work created and premiered by Shamel Pitts, Mirelle Martins and Lucca del Carlo in São Paulo, Nov/2016. 'Black Velvet' researches and shares the sensibility of ideals, models and textures as a projection of self. The dealing within these structures of systems is to discover what is inside of us, between us and around us. To hopefully bridge the distances so that we can see and meet each other. An independent and international performance art project made possible with the collaboration of many individuals, institutions and professionals.
About the artists
Shamel Pitts & Mirelle Martins
Shame Pitts was born in Brooklyn New York. He began his dance training at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and continued, simultaneously, at The Ailey School. Shamel then went on to receive his BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School and began his professional dance career with BJM_Danse Montreal and Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Hell’s Kitchen Dance. Shamel continued his career with Batsheva Dance Company for 7 years. He is a teacher of Gaga.
Brazilian performance artist Mirelle Martins was born in Goiânia-GO and is now living in New York City. She made her Bachelor in Social Communication at Universidade de Brasília on 2006 and moved to São Paulo in 2008. She worked as independent curator and executive producer in diverse art projects. She started research dance and performance on 2013. She is producer and translator of GAGA, the movement language created by Ohad Naharin. In 2017 Mirelle Martins moved to NYC to do a dance research and residency with Sidra Bell Dance New York.
