Pre-show Introduction to 'Hamlet'

Since 2019, the Globe Berlin in Charlottenburg has been a venue for genuine popular theatre in a unique open-air setting from June to September. The deliberately low-threshold programme is aimed at people of all ages, from different cultural backgrounds and is close to current social issues. The programme includes drama, spoken word and live music, Shakespeare performances in German and English in contemporary translations, as well as introductions and after-show discussions - all at moderate admission prices.

As popular theatre and one of the few cultural institutions in Charlottenburg-Nord, the Globe Berlin sets great value on inclusivity. This is reflected in a policy of ensuring tickets are affordable, a programme which includes productions in German and English (in both original text and modern translations), and a tradition of pre-show introductions and post-show discussions. The latter are organised by the Globe Berlin Friends, the theatre's circle of friends, made up of neighbours, patrons and regular guests. The Globe Friends gain an insight into the theatre's operations with rehearsal visits, get in touch with the ensemble during previews or theatre parties, get involved in the theatre's work as volunteers and acquire supporters. If you'd like to get to know the Globe's ensemble and circle of friends and find out more about the productions and the theatre, the Globe Berlin Friends invite you to a free introduction by the theatre management at 6:30 pm before each premiere of the 2024 season, including a welcome drink. On the 6th of September director Mathias Schönsee will introduce the show.

The programme includes drama, spoken word and live music, Shakespeare performances in German and English in contemporary translations, as well as introductions and after-show discussions - all at moderate admission prices. Until the (re)construction begins, the dismantled theatre will be stored at its future location and numerous wooden components will form a ring-shaped catwalk, the "open-o-stage". Here, the audience sits on chairs in the centre of the action, in which the surrounding nature, the weather and the urban backdrop also play a role. Complemented by some imaginative transitional structures such as the "Schmetterling" as a lounge for the artists and the "Octogon" as a foyer and rehearsal room, an extraordinary venue has been created where more than 30,000 visitors have already experienced the diverse, multilingual programme.

Hamlet

The tragedy of a hopeful young man who has a task placed on his shoulders that weighs too heavily for him, which he fails at and ultimately perishes, symbolizes a successor generation, its values and ideals and the decision to rebel against the abuse of power, manipulation and corruption in politics and restore justice. The production approaches the European classic with the formal means of traditional theatre. The archetypal characteristics and ambivalences of the characters are emphasized through concentrated physicality and symbolic costumes. A simple, poetic visual language allows us to concentrate on Shakespeare's study of man and his linguistic masterpiece.
